Friend: A companion or an enemy?
If I was in the story...
... I definitely would have been a close friend of George Wilson. Now, you might ask why I picked George Wilson out of all the people in the story. The answer is simple: He is poor, yet innocent. One of the reasons why I do not like all the other people in story is that I already know so much from them already. They are all flat characters and they do not seem to have a definite goal in their life. In other words, it appears that everybody lives with what he or she has right now. On the other hand, George Wilson works in an old car repair shop and lives with what he has in his house. He just strives to live without any actions or commitments that might lead to major consequences (aka crimes that are investigated).

Important Values of a "real" Friend
Anybody could be friend with anybody else, but it matters who your "real" friend is. A "real" friend is somebody you can trust with your deepest secrets. It should be a person that actually cares about you and who would stand at your side no matter what. However, in the book "The Great Gatsby", a friend is determined by the concurrent personalities. That is a friend is usually who has the same point of view on matters or situations that is usually different from other people's. For example, if there is a big festival happening on the streets, Myrtle would go and fascinate about it, while Tom would arrogantly dismiss it and head straight to his apartment. Even though both are supposed to be flirting, this expresses a contradictory relationship between those two.
